Side Effects of Acupuncture?!?!?!

Writer: Carla Marie TothCarla Marie Toth

As we all know, medicine usually has side effects.  Many pharmaceuticals long term use can create inflammation in the body and cause other health issues.

Acupuncture also has common side effects…but they are generally wonderful.

So what are common side effects of acupuncture?

Reset the nervous system.

Most of us are running on various levels of fight or flight (activated sympathetic nervous system).  Most acupuncture treatments help the body move into a relaxed peaceful state (activated parasympathetic nervous system). Over time, whether intended or not, people feel more relaxed with regular acupuncture treatments.

Better digestion.

Most people in this country have poor digestive health. Most of us have unintentionally (or intentionally) eaten foods that our bodies don’t like: GMO foods, processed foods and regular intake of inflammatory foods.  Part of an acupuncture treatment is to get all the systems in balance, often taking place in the system that helps us build healthy Qi and blood - the digestive system.

Mental clarity.

Acupuncture is designed to facilitate healthy Qi and blood flow throughout the whole body. When Qi and blood flow are stagnant they can cause many to feel mentally and physically lethargic. As the acupuncture treatments clear out this stagnation a side effect can be a clearer mind. This is also a part of what happens when the nervous system is reset - it allows the mind to be more clear, as well.

More energy.

As our bodies are in a more balanced state of Qi and blood flow, and having a calm nervous system many people start experiencing more healthy energy - not needing an extra cup of caffeinated beverage or adrenaline rush to keep going through the day.

Less stress.

As our Qi and blood are flowing, the nervous system is calmer and having more mental clarity, most people are able to handle the stressful events in their life with more ease. The “stressful incidences” don’t necessarily change, just the reactions to it.

When you’re thinking about whether or not acupuncture is helping you, let yourself assess your side effects. Chances are good it is influencing the quality of your life.
